Networking can be extremely valuable in finding that one perfect connection to help propel your songwriting career.

You might find this person at industry events or even online. Go to CD launch parties, club openings, live concerts. Create social networking accounts such as myspace, Facebook, or join online conversations.

The person who can help your career could your friend’s friend who is a band manager looking for a songwriter. They may be the DJ at the local club who has connections to record executives. They may also be your music chat room friend who just got hired in a music publishing firm.

The important thing is to network and make the connections so you can show these people your lyrics. If they are unable to do anything with your lyrics, they may know someone who can. That’s the nature of networking.

Collaborate

Work with a composer or a musician. Whether they are established or up-and-comers, you can feed off of each other’s energy, talent, and connections. The first step to collaborating is agreeing what the working process will be, how credits are assigned, and how your profits will be divided. Get it in writing to avoid problems down the road. Finding the right collaborator whose style compliments and enhances yours may prove to be a profitable long-term partnership.
